In this two-day workshop, Moon Byung Sik a.k.a MoonDoBang will teach his masterful technique of throwing large moon jars. Students will be able to learn the methodology and techniques for throwing large moon jars, from throwing tall cylinder form to bellying out the form.

Moon owns and operates MoonDoBang, located in Yeoju, South Korea. He is a hardworking and masterful potter. Moon puts in a lot of effort; he used to work from early in the morning till late at night for more than 15 hours every day. He produces 1000–3000 pots every month with an assistant’s help.

His thrown pieces are so flawless and clean that they are frequently mistaken for mold-made pieces. Moon, however, is convinced that there is a significant distinction between a pot that is thrown by hand and one that is slip cast or made in a mold using a ram press. On hand-thrown ceramics, he notices that the contours and shapes are richer and more delicate. Therefore, he throws all of the pots by himself to attain his precise aesthetic.

“I throw everything but I do not think it is hard work, because I like to do it. I enjoy working on the wheel but I recently started to make square and octagonal-shaped plates, which are not thrown on a wheel, to make additions for diverse table settings. When I have only thrown pots in a table setting, it seems too simple because everything is round. Thrown work is more popular to sell but I try to develop my designs for consumers to create various table settings.”
