Master Class in Spontaneous Throwing
with Kazuya Ishida 石田 和也

The natural beauty of instinctive making, working with clay spontaneously. In this 4 days immersive workshop, we will learn various wheel throwing techniques with ceramist Kazuya Ishida. Native to the renowned Japanese pottery village of Bizen, Kaz will share his unique techniques and his philosophy behind making, teaching the way of expressing primordial beauty of clay with centrifugal force, exploring the rhythm and patterns of Nature.
Participants will have the opportunity to experiment with a variety of surface textures, and vessel shapes by wheel throwing.
- Basic throwing experience required
- Conducted in English
*Tuition includes: general studio materials, 1 bag of white clay & 1 bag of black clay, firing services.
*Finished works can be collected approximately 5-6 weeks after the completed workshop at the studio.
*Participants can request bisque firing only services.
Workshop Schedule - 4 Days Spontaneous Throwing Workshop
Friday, March 10: Day 1
DAY 1: 13:00-19:00
- An introduction by Kazuya Ishida
- Getting familiar with the materials, clay tools, the wheel
- Basic skills, such as wedging
- Demonstration of wheel throwing techniques
Saturday, March 11: Day 2 & Sunday, March 12: Day 3
DAY 2&3: 13:00-19:00
- Highlight: Spiral throwing demonstration with different variations and sizes.
Monday, March 13: Day 4
DAY 4: 13:00-19:00
- Last day: Finishing pots.
