Master Class in Expressive Portrait Drawing
With Oliver Sin
May 27-28, 2023 11a.m. - 5p.m. (Lunch break 1-2p.m.)
This workshop will help students to make competent drawings of portraits. Whether students beginners or have some experience, this class will further their skills. Step-by-step demonstrations by artist/author/instructor Oliver Sin will help students look closely and understand the structure of the face. Students will draw from the pic reference and learn the techniques of mastering expressive portraiture with different dry media. All levels are welcome!
Oliver’s first art book, “Drawing the Head for Artists” is published by the Rockport publisher in 2019 and two of his portraits were commissioned and featured on the cover of the Time Magazine as part of their "100 Women of the Year" project, March 2020 issue. Streamline Publishing published my first educational step-by-step DVD, "Portrait Drawing Simplified, " in April 2022. Vine charcoal portrait drawing of his dad won First Place in Drawing at the Portrait Society of America International Art Competition in 2021. For consistent achievements of artistic excellence in the art field of fine art portraiture, he earned "Signature Status" with the Portrait Society of America in 2022.

DAY 1
13:00 - 13:30: An introduction to Taruta’s artwork and technique, knowledge of the “Hotarude” technique including glaze and firing. Basic knowledge about Seto City, the ceramics town.
13:30 - 14:00: Tips on tackling porcelain, demonstration on wheel-throwing.
14:00 - 15:30: Practice making Cups, Sake cups, and Teacups.
15:30 - 16:00: Coffee break.
16:00 - 16:30: Demonstration on Bowl and Katakuchi (Teaware), Open shape vessels.
16:30 - 19:00: Practice and comment.
DAY 2
13:00 - 14:00: Trimming, demonstration on Hotarude, and glazing in “Hotarude” style.
14:00 - 15:30: Trimming, craving practice, and comment.
14:00 - 15:30: Practice making Cups, Sake cups, and Teacups.
15:30 - 16:00: Coffee break.
16:00 - 19:00: “Hotarude” trimming practice and comment.
