In this 5-day workshop, Zhaoming will teach a traditional “painterly” technique of oil painting. It will be applied to portrait and clothed figure painting in an “alla prima” approach. Emphasis will be placed on composition, colour and understanding light on form. It will include the process of producing appropriate values and edges to create mood and atmosphere. Students will be led into portrait and clothed figure painting practice by observing Zhaoming’s demonstrations along with individual instruction, and critiques.

Influenced by the 19th century European painters, Zhaoming Wu describes his work as representational, but not traditional classical. This technique can be seen through the combination of more modern elements. Utilising his knowledge of heightened colours and values, he makes powerful, conscious decisions about their application. Active for many years as both an artist and a teacher, Zhaoming has works exhibited in museums and private collections around the world.

The national and international publications have highlighted his vibrant career and technique. He has been featured in major domestic art magazines and has published 11 books.

Workshop Schedule

2/3 Day 1 (Portrait Painting)
- Demonstration by Zhaoming in the morning (3 hours), live elderly male model
- Students paint from the same model in the afternoon (3 hours), Zhaoming will give the individual instruction, critique in the afternoon


3/3 Day 2 (Portrait Painting)
- Demonstration by Zhaoming in the morning (3 hours), live young female model
- Students paint from the same model in the afternoon (3 hours), Zhaoming will give the individual instruction, critique in the afternoon


4/3 Day 3 (Clothed Figure Painting)
- Demonstration by Zhaoming in the morning (3 hours), live young female model A
- Students paint from the same model in the afternoon (3 hours), Zhaoming will give the individual instruction, critique in the afternoon


5/3 Day 4 (Clothed Figure Painting)
- Demonstration by Zhaoming in the morning (3 hours), live young female model B
- Students paint from the same model in the afternoon (3 hours), Zhaoming will give the individual instruction, critique in the afternoon


6/3 Day 5 (Clothed Figure Painting)
- No demonstration
- Young female model C for 6 hours pose, Zhaoming will give the individual instruction and critique
