Imaginary Cities: MasterClass in Slab Building
With Eunbi Cho
31th August - 3stst September 2023
This workshop will cover unique slab building techniques and surface treatments. Are you having troubles with your slabs? Ceramicist Eunbi Cho will guide you through the basics of slab building, how to plan and design the structure, making a clean and straight slab build. You will also learn how to cut out geometric details and carve tiles-like textures. She will also share her techniques and the choice of colors in glazing, inspired by the energetic combinations of colors from traditional Korean textiles.
Eunbi's ceramics are based on her sensory memories of the people, culture, and cities she lived in while living in Korea, Belgium, and Los Angeles. Each of her pieces functions under the banner of "made for play," with a sense of functionality but always with an emphasis on the "fun."
Her most recent work is a series of sculptures inspired by Italo Calvino's novel, Invisible Cities.
“After reading Italo Calvino’s Invisible City in one sitting, I immediately began visualizing my own city – a city visible on the horizon at night, its glow attracting seekers from afar. But upon arrival at the city’s boundaries, they’d discover they’re ‘nowhere’, without an entrance, with nothing to see nor hear.”
Eunbi has established a body of work that is consistently unpredictable and protean. Her works are influenced by people, as she investigates object interaction with distinct and playful intention.
