Phenomena: Master Class in Engobes Painting

With Jin Eui Kim

4-Day | July 12-15th, 2024 (FRI-MON) | 1 p.m. - 7 p.m.

In this 3-day workshop, Students will learn new wheel-throwing (lidded box & large form) and trimming techniques by creating one of the forms in Jin’s work, combined with how to create grooves on the surface during the trimming process.

Students will also learn about making and painting engobes, with the unique methods Jin uses to control (wheel speed, brush size, and pre-soaking the body before applying engobes) to smoothly apply them on the surface of bisque pieces.

Jin will share his artworks and concepts, his artistic development, techniques and types of work, etc. Jin explores how the perception of three-dimensional ceramic forms can be manipulated by the arrangement of tones on their surfaces. By varying the width, spacing, and contrast of lines or bands, he creates optical effects that can alter the viewer's experience of the actual form. These illusions are further influenced by factors such as the colour and tone of the background, the distance between the viewer and artwork, and the location and intensity of light.

Highlights:

🌟 Wheel-throwing: Lidded box, tall cylinder, and techniques to tackle large form

🌟 Trimming: Create concave and convex grooves on the surface, playing with flattened or ridged and shades create illusory phenomena

🌟 Engobe Painting:  Learn about making and painting engobes, with the unique methods to smoothly apply bisque surface
