The natural beauty of instinctive making, working with clay spontaneously. In this immersive workshop, we will learn various wheel throwing techniques with the master ceramist Kazuya Ishida. Native to the Japanese pottery village of Bizen, Kaz will share his unique techniques and his philosophy behind making, teaching the way of expressing primordial beauty of clay with centrifugal force, exploring the rhythm and patterns of Nature.

Participants will have the opportunity to experiment with a variety of surface textures, and vessel shapes by wheel throwing.

Kazuya Ishida was born in Okayama, Japan, in 1986. It was virtually a given that he would carry on his father’s legacy given his upbringing in the Bizen tradition and with clay. Kazuya earned his degree in pottery in 2007 and continued his education under National Living Treasure Jun Isezaki. He made his first of many travels to the UK in 2011 to work at Kigbeare Pottery in Devon. Since then, he has worked at Whichford Pottery and contributed to the creation of the Wytham Woods Anagama project for Oxford University.

In his work, Kazuya Ishida blends traditional Bizen pottery techniques with executional aspects from his numerous trips to the UK.
